French supermarkets warn of listeria in smoked salmon

The French retailers Carrefour and Auchan are taking more Marine Harvest smoked-salmon products from shelves. Listeria monocytogenes, bacteria that causes listeriosis, was recently detected in the products.

The bacteria can cause mild flu symptoms accompanied by fever, diarrhea and vomiting. It can also cause more grave conditions such as meningitis or cause pregnant women to miscarrage.

In general, pregnant women and the elderly are at the greatest risk for severe infection.
