Redefinition of cabotage will become law

Regulations governing maritime cabotage, the transport of passengers or goods on vessels within the same country, will be redefined now that the Chamber of Deputies approved the bill.

The proposal modifies the Merchant Marine Promotion Act, introducing a new title: “Cabotage and Shipment Reserves.” Cabotage continues to be reserved for Chilean vessels transporting passengers or cargo between national territory destinations in the country’s exclusive economic zone or territorial sea.

Finally, the new law establishes that passenger cabotage on foreign vessels will not be applicable in the Juan Fernandez Archipelago and Easter Island.
