Added value and diversification: The stake of Spanish aquaculture
With a long tradition in fishing —very likely because of the country’s high per capita consumption currently at about 30 kilos annually— Spain also has a long history in industrial-scale aquaculture. The granddaughter of one of the pioneers of the mussel ( Mytilus edulis) aquaculture pioneers, Francisco Piñeiro, told AQUA magazine that the first experiences were undertaken in the mid 1940s in the waters of the Autonomous Community of Galicia. A few years later, in that same area, one of the most successful mussel-farming industries was created which today produces approximately 260,000 gross tons worth about US$300 million.
