Summary
Algae production:
Slow but steady

Algae are a key part of our daily lives as they are the raw material of many foodstuffs that we consume every day. They are also characterized for being rich in proteins, trace elements and vitamins, all components that have been incorporated to different products with industrial, agricultural and pharmaceutical uses throughout the world.

Chile concentrates its production on algae with high potential to be used as food additives and in other industries, like the textile and pharmaceutical industries. Among the principal species produced are red algae (Rhodophytas), from which agar agar and carrageenates are extracted; brown algae (Phaeophytas), from which alginates are obtained; and to a lesser extent, green algae (Clorophytas), from which pigments like carotene and xantophile are extracted.

However, just as Eduardo Bustos, the executive secretary of the Committee of Marine Algae Producers and Processors, explained, this industry has currently been affected by an increase in the costs of its input matrix, especially product transportation and a strong depreciation of the US dollar over the past few months. Notwithstanding, a longer-term view raises hope for this sector, especially, with regard to the each company’s projects.
