Summary
César Barros, president of SalmonChile
“The only thing that can happen with salmon demand is to continue growing”
The president of the Association of the Salmon Industry in Chile (SalmonChile), Cesar Barros, has had problems because of his direct, frank way of talking. At the beginning of this year, Barros, an agronomist from the Catholic University of Chile, with a PhD in Economics from Stanford University, United States, made comments that were published on the press, which were not well received by the inhabitants of Puerto Montt. But he excused himself for “the unfortunate statement”, which referred to the poor economic development the city had before the arrival of salmon farming.
Perhaps directing one of the country’s most important industries, with all of the demands that means every day and considering his personal activities, made him forget some of the formalities that help to keep harmonious relationships with everybody.
As Barros recognizes, “this has been a very complicated year, which started with the royalty and ended with the same issue. To this we must add the difficult conditions created by the Aysen earthquake and now by the labor conflicts. But besides that, we have reformulated the representation in SalmonChile, creating a council that makes it much more representative and democratic. We also reorganized the board of directors, and we are working to create a foundation, and we restructured the Intesal (Salmon Technological Institute.”
The fifth version of AQUA SUR will take place at the end of March. Although this will be your first fair, what expectations do you have in relation to this international event?
Together with AquaNor, these are the big aquaculture events and, therefore, there is great effervescence because it gathers industry players and it becomes an important meeting place.
Specifically, I think that we need greater coordination with the Norwegian industry in terms of organization, communication of policies, technologies, businesses and joint marketing. But above all, we must coordinate our communication with the public in general, as there have been some conflicts in that respect. AQUA SUR will be a good opportunity to reach consensus about some things.
During the latest dinner of Salmon farmers, you said that the industry would double its shipments in 2015. What are those projections based on? Did you take the appearance of new challenges and the drop in the prices of salmon and trout that have occurred in some markets into account?
The variations in prices are part of life in any industry and that has to be taken into account. However, in a recent seminar attended by several Norwegians, I think that the parties agreed that the only thing that can occur with the demand for salmon is for it to continue growing and becoming stronger. Obviously, unexpected events may arise in the mean time, but the long-term trend is to continue growing. Therefore, and after overcoming some challenges, the industry should continue growing at rates of about 10%, thereby doubling its size in the areas where it is not so big, like in regions XI and XII.
