Summary
Luis Klaassen, president of AmiChile
“The incorporation of big companies has been a significant contribution to the industry”

Mussel (Mytilus chilensis) farmers of the Island of Chiloe (Region X) are happy. In accordance with the announcements made to AQUA magazine over a year ago, the current president of the Association of Mussel Farmers of Chiloe (AmiChile), Luis Klaassen, the entrance of new big companies to the industry has generated alliances between them and the smaller farmers as a way of meeting the great demand for the mussels in the international markets. The relationships based on trust that have been created have benefited all those who want to participate in this activity.

Chilean mussel farming showed strong growth in 2007. What can this be attributed to?
The sector has been growing steadily for several years because of the industry’s great potential and the significant demand for mussels around the world. Therefore, sizeable investment has been made in Region X, chiefly in Chiloe.

A little over a year ago, you expressed that with the arrival of new companies to the sector, small producers would have to look for better opportunities through strategic alliances. What balance can you make in this regard?
As we forecasted, these alliances were established because of the great demand for mussels. The companies realized that it is difficult to produce large volumes alone; therefore, the necessary confidence was generated within the Association to work together. This has worked fine, although there is always room for improving.

Do you think that Chile will become the second world producer of mussels in 2010 as it has been predicted?
According to calculations, we are currently the fourth producer of mussels in the world. I think that it is possible that in 2010 we may become the second producer, provided that the hatcheries are properly taken care of and operated as they are the beginning of every culture.
