Facing Peruvian competition
Las year was a difficult one for Chilean scallop farmers, chiefly due to the low exchange rate that affected the price of scallops in the European market, whose principal export destination country is France. As a way to alleviate the crisis, the general manager of the Chilean Association of Oyster and Scallop Farmers (Apooch), Ivonne Etchepare, says that they have had to diversify towards other markets and resources.
Which were the main challenges faced by scallop farmers in 2007?
The principal difficulty faced last year—which continues representing a problem today—was the decline in the price of the scallop in the European market. The value was lower than the production cost in Chile because of the abrupt supply of scallops from natural banks from Peru, which made Chilean scallop lose competitiveness.
Nevertheless, the other problem, which had a tremendous impact on the industry, continues being the low exchange rate. Although the average FOB price last year was not the lowest of the past ten years, the exchange rate was significantly lower.
What are the industry’s challenges for the coming three years? What are your production projections?
The annual scallop production volume that goes to exports should continue at around the same current potential 2,500 tons, with variations of approximately 20% due to the usual commercial or health-environmental restrictions, which do not permit harvesting the entire susceptible biomass in the calendar year.
However, the production volume of scallops for the local market or for exporting to smaller neighboring countries could grow as a result of the development of scallop farming in some Areas of Management and Exploitation of Benthonic Resources allocated to associations of non-industrial fishermen.
