Summary
Eduardo Bustos, executive secretary of Copram
“Our most serious problem is the drop in the price of the dollar”

The Committee of Producers and Processors of Marine Algae (Copram) was created with the support of the Sociedad Nacional de Pesca – Sonapesca (National Fisheries Association) in January 2004 and it currently gathers more than 90% of the largest algae processors in Chile, whose principal products are obtained from species like brown algae, luga and Chilean selly weed (Gracilaria spp.)

Copram’s main objective is promoting the industry’s sustainable development in order to make it a relevant activity in Chile. Its mission is proposing restocking and farming management policies for the algae species frequently sold, thereby ensuring the availability of such species in the long term,” proudly asserts one of the creators and the current executive secretary of the association, Eduardo Bustos, who explains that the activity is divided into aquaculture and extraction.

During 2007 industry exports totaled US$ 138 million, a figure that rose 10% compared with the same date in 2006, accounting for 3.6% of aquaculture-fishing sector exports. The main product is agar-agar, which represented 33% of those returns.

The average FOB price of total algae products exported in the January-December 2007 period, however, totaled US$ 2,304/t, showing a drop of almost 10% compared with the same period the year before. This fact has aroused great concern in the industry.
