Aquaculture companies generate 2000 jobs: Aquaculture projections for the Atacama coast
Like AQUA Magazine was able to confirm in its visit to the area, the projections for the aquaculture business in Region III are based on real facts. Aquaculture is definitively an essential part of the “Atacama Agenda”, a program that seeks to promote the development of that industry. The regional secretary of the Ministry of Economy for Region III, Gerardo Vergara, enthusiastically acknowledges that the unsurpassable natural conditions of the 530 kilometers of the Atacama coast—with closed bays, gentle currents, water depth and temperature suitable for developing aquaculture—give Region III competitive advantages to obtain quality resources. In addition, the aquaculture companies in the area have signed and implemented the “Clean Production Agreement” (CPA) for the Northern Scallop” and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States has certified the Region’s bays. The area also has centers that are part of the sanitation program of bivalve mollusks especially farmed for exporting to the United States and European Union markets.
