Testimony
Book "Aquaculture in Chile":
Testimony of an industry trascendence (abstract)

Read complete article (pdf)

This publication - printed by TechnoPress S.A. and SalmonChile - will be launched in August. In its Spanish and English versions it intends to leave a testimony as to the evolution and development of this industry, whose impact both nationally and internationally is of great significance. This is a history of vision, effort, leading-edge technology and entrepreneurial creativity, of economic and social growth, and of a sustainable development. This is a story of men and women who have believed in an activity that strongly projects into the future. We invite our readers to get to know the history of aquaculture in Chile, a brief summary of which we present below.

Explosive and exciting. Such has been the development of aquaculture in Chile; a dynamic history that was shaped with the efforts of daring pioneers of salmon farming who did not quit when facing a challenge that at times became more and more difficult, who during stormy nights struggled under the heavy rain to save their facilities and who with elementary techniques worked with yokes of oxen and built wooden raft-cages.

They laid the foundations of what it is now one of the main economic activities in Chile; they opened the way so that in the XX century other visionary men could develop new farmings, thus making it possible for practically all the Chilean coast, and even hinterland valleys from north to south to have hatcheries and facilities where salmonidae, scallops, oysters, Chilean mussels, abalones, turbots and algae are farmed. This, without considering the unnumbered experimental projects and/or under the phase of transference of other species. Some examples are the hirame or Japanese solefish (Paralicthys olivaceus); catfish (Ictalurus punctatus); razor shell or razor clam (Ensis macha); southern hake (Merluccius australis) and seaweed (Macrocystis pyrifera).

That story that continues to be written day by day will be portrayed in the book "Aquaculture in Chile", a deluxe publication printed by TechnoPress S.A. and SalmonChile. The book in its Spanish and English versions seeks to leave a testimony as to the way this industry has developed, abiding by international business standards and the world concern regarding environmental preservation. A testimony that addresses both the past and present from different angles and that allows us to verify that this activity - one of the main sources of foreign exchange for the country - strongly projects into the future.
