Aquaculture industry stakeholders communicate vital role in global food security at FAO event
This week, IFFO the Marine Ingredients Organisation hosted a side event with partners at the Committee on Fisheries 33rd Session (COFI 33), held by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO). The side event titled ‘a sustainable future for aquaculture’ gives an opportunity for fishery and feed bodies to communicate the pivotal role that aquaculture plays in global food security, as well as the opportunities and challenges faced across the industry.
Along with IFFO, partners for the event were: FAO, European Feed Manufacturers’ Federation (FEFAC), Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA), The Global Standard for Responsible Supply (IFFO RS), National Fisheries Institute (NFI) and Skretting. IFFO’s Technical Director, Dr Neil Auchterlonie, represented the marine ingredients industry and discussed the key role of fishmeal and fish oil as feed ingredients, including the importance of the materials in developing modern fed aquaculture. Other speakers presenting were: Melanie Siggs, Global Aquaculture Alliance; John Connelly, National Fisheries Institute; Trygve Berg Lea, Skretting; Dr Niels Alsted, FEFAC, and Dr Rodrigo Roubach, FAO.
Following his presentation, IFFO’s Neil Auchterlonie noted that «this event presented a unique opportunity to engage stakeholders, and especially government officials and policy-makers, from across the food and agricultural industry, raising the profile and importance of the aquaculture industry. Marine ingredients, most notably fishmeal and fish oil, are the foundation of feed for the aquaculture industry and remain a strategic ingredient given the highly nutritious qualities. At IFFO, we are working hard to encourage responsible sourcing and finding the most effective way to use these valuable ingredients.»

Esta semana, la IFFO, que es la organización no gubernamental que representa y promueve la industria de harina y aceite de pescado y otros ingredientes de origen marino a nivel mundial, organizó una reunión con sus socios que participaron del 33° período de sesiones del Comité de Pesca (COFI 33), celebrado por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO, por su sigla en inglés).
La instancia se tituló «Un futuro sustentable para la acuicultura» y, de acuerdo con el director técnico de la IFFO, Dr. Neil Auchterlonie, ofreció una «oportunidad para que los organismos sectoriales y los delegados que asistieron a COFI 33 profundicen en el rol vital que desempeña la acuicultura en la seguridad alimentaria mundial, así como las oportunidades y los desafíos que enfrenta la industria».
Además del Dr. Auchterlonie, en el encuentro expusieron Melanie Siggs de la Alianza Global de la Acuicultura (GAA, por su sigla en inglés); John Connelly del Instituto Nacional de Pesca de Estados Unidos (NFI, por su sigla en inglés); Trygve Berg Lea, director de Sustentabilidad del grupo Skretting; Dr. Niels Alsted de la Federación Europea de Fabricantes de Alimentos para Acuicultura (FEFAC, por su sigla en inglés), y el Dr. Rodrigo Roubach de la FAO.
Tras su presentación, el Dr. Auchterlonie comentó que los ingredientes marinos, especialmente la harina de pescado y el aceite de pescado, «son la base de los alimentos para la industria acuícola y siguen siendo un insumo estratégico dadas sus cualidades altamente nutritivas». Y aseguró: «en IFFO estamos trabajando arduamente para alentar el abastecimiento responsable y encontrar la forma más efectiva de utilizar estos valiosos ingredientes».
