Japanese flounder: In search of investors
Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), is one of the flat fishes mostly craved by the Japanese market, where it is chiefly used for sushi. It was introduced into Chile from Hawaii, U.S.A. in 1997 within the framework of the D96/1068 Fondef Project "Optimization and diversification of the flat fish farming technology in Chile”, conducted by Fundación Chile, which also included the development of flounder (Paralichthys adspersus) farming techniques in the hatchery and growing phases, the introduction of halibut (Hipoglossus hipoglossus) and the diversification of the farming techniques of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus), introduced into Chile in the 1980s.
Three years later the execution of the continuation project “Development of Japanese flounder farming in the north of Chile” was started, which was assigned $45 million. The main objective was contributing to the progress of the commercial farming of Japanese flounder and attracting the interest of local and foreign businessmen to invest in commercial growing.
